More on Lower Baja

The Baja features four major mountain ranges: Sierra Juarez, Sierra de San Pedro Martir, Sierra de la Giganta, Sierra de la Laguna, and many minor ranges.
Much of Baja California is desert or mountains.
Baja California South (Sur) includes the capital of La Paz, that many people believe is the most "Mexican" of the Baja cities, and the resort centers of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Ferries run from La Paz to the Mexican Mainland. Great shopping, modern resort hotels, fabulous beaches, and unbelievable weather in the Los Cabos area, attract many thousands of visitors and permanent residents from the U.S. and Canada. Towns like Todos Santos offers a nice year-round climate. Sea of Cortez towns like Mulege feature fabulous diving, snorkeling and kayaking opportunities, and Loreto is becoming a retirement mecca.
The south-central areas around Gerrero Negro on the Pacific side, and Mulege to La Paz on the Sea of Cortez side, are becoming popular whale watching sites!
La Paz (Peace), is the capital of Baja California Sur. It is not as popular with tourists as the Los Cabos corridor, but it offers much of the same facilities, without sacrificing it's colonial past. It has great shopping, a nice beach-front boulevard, old colonial buildings, and a relaxed atmosphere. It is probably the most 'Mexican' of the Baja cities, and for many people, it is their favorite city on the Baja. La Paz is famous for it's glorious sunsets.
North of the city are the towns of Loreto (a resort area just now beginning to become popular), and Muluge (a town already famous for it's diving spots). Near Mulege is Bahia de Concepcion, one of the best places in the world for diving, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. Protected clear water is the attraction.
The population of La Paz is estimated at 160,000. It reminds one of a typical city in southern France along the Mediteranean coast. A wide boulevard for walking and/or driving, with the beach on one side and open-air restaurants on the other. The boulevard extends for miles.

San Jose del Cabo is more laid back and traditional than San Lucas. It is 18 miles east of San Lucas, and the town center is a few blocks away from the waterfront. A nice main street and quieter surroundings are San Jose's attractions. It has lots of restaurants too, and many nice housing developments. Prices are still fairly high here too.
The beaches and resorts between San Jose and San Lucas are unbelievable. You could spend days just exploring these fabulous resorts. The beaches will remind you of Hawaii.
East Cape is the area East and North of San Jose del Cabo. Most of it's area is accessible only by dirt road at the present time. It has all the fabulous beaches of the lower cape and practically no people. You can walk for miles on a beautiful sand beach and see no other people. The water is warm and the fishing is probably the best in the world. Real estate prices are lower here, and investment opportunities can be found. When the roads are paved, prices will rise considerably.
Todos Santos is about 45 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas. It has traditionally been an artists community, but gringos are starting to discover it too. The summer weather here is a little cooler than Cabo San Lucas and definitely cooler than the rest of the southern Baja, so it has the most pleasant year-round climate. It is located about 1 kilometer from the beaches, and some good surfing opportunities.
